Jae Young Lee is a principal architect of Interface Studios as well as a professor at Hongik University. He studied architecture and urban design at Seoul National University and the Graduate School of Architecture in University of Pennsylvania. While attending University of Pennsylvania, he was awarded the Dales Traveling Fellowship and the Schenck Henry Gillette Woodman Scholarship. In 2009, he won the grand prize at the Evolo International Competition, in which 416 projects from 64 countries were submitted, and in 2010, he participated as a jury member of the Evolo International Competition for the year of 2011.
Prior to the establishing Interface Studios, Mr. Lee had more than 10 years of experiences at most renowned architectural design firms in the US and Eurpoe. He began his professional career working at Foster+Partners in London, UK., then continued his career at UNStudio in Amsterdam, Netherlands. At UNStudio, as an architect/lead designer, Mr. Lee gained experiences in a wide range of projects including the Galleria Center City project in Cheonan, Hangzhou Masterplan and V on Shenton in Singapore. He was a member of Smart Parametric Unit (SPU), a digital design research group, where he accumulated various experiences in design and digital architecture.
Afterwards Mr. Lee was as an Associate/Senior Designer at Skidmore, Owings And Merrill (SOM) in New York, US. He led the design effortss as Senior Designer for the United Arab Emirates Mission to the United Nations, Brookfields’ Manhattan West Masterplan Developments, Hyundai Motor Group’s Global Business Center HQ. Tower at Samseong-dong (HMG GBC Project). He is a Registered Architect in New York State (US) and has NCARB certification.
인터페이스 스튜디오의 대표이자 홍익대학교 건축도시대학의 교수로서 건축과 도시, 실내건축의 다양한 스케일에 대한 관심을 바탕으로 설계 작업을 진행하고 있다. 서울대학교와 펜실베니아 건축대학원에서 건축과 도시를 공부했으며, 펜실베니아대학 재학시절에는 Dales Traveling Fellowship과 Schenck Henry Gillette Woodman 장학금을 수상했다. 2009년에는 64개국 416개의 프로젝트가 제출되었던 Evolo 국제 공모전에서 대상을 수상했으며 2010년에는 Evolo 국제 공모전의 심사위원으로 참여했다.
인터페이스 스튜디오 설립 이전에는 세계적 명성을 지닌 유럽과 미국의 설계사에서 다양한 프로젝트를 경험하며 10년여의 실무 경력을 쌓았다. 영국 런던의 Foster+Partners에서 실무를 시작하였으며, 이후 네덜란드 암스테르담의 UNStudio에서 Architect로 근무하며, 천안 갤러리아 센터시티 프로젝트를 포함한 다수 프로젝트에서 Lead Designer로 참여하였다. 또한, 디지털 디자인 리서치그룹인 Smart Parametric Unit의 일원으로 Digital Designer 역할을 수행하며 디자인과 디지털 건축에 관한 다양한 경험을 쌓았다. 이후 미국 뉴욕의 Skidmore, Owings And Merrill (SOM)에서 Associate/Senior Designer로 근무하며, 주 UN 아랍에미리트 공화국 대표부 프로젝트, 맨해튼 웨스트 마스터플랜, 삼성동 한전부지 현대자동차 사옥 프로젝트(HMG GBC Project)에 Senior Designer 자격으로 참여하며 팀을 이끌었다. 미국 뉴욕주의 Registered Architect (미국 건축사)이며 NCARB 인증을 가지고 있다.
