지식과 사람이 머무는 언덕 - 송도 국제 도서관

컨벤시아대로와 아카데미로가 교차하는 대지는 해안의 개방감과 도심의 고밀도 경관이 중첩되는 송도 국제도시의 상징적 결절점이다. The ARC는 이러한 장소성을 바탕으로 도시와 자연을 매개하며, 일상과 문화가 공존하는 새로운 공공의 아이콘을 제안한다. 건물은 남향 배치를 통해 자연 채광을 극대화하고, 포스코타워와 시각적으로 조응하는 동시에 해안선을 향해 매스를 확장함으로써 도시와 자연의 축을 동시에 수용한다.

The ARC의 구조는 역현수선 곡선을 따르는 캐터너리 아치(Catenary Arch)를 기반으로 하며, 중력에 의해 형성되는 가장 효율적인 구조 논리를 가시적으로 드러낸다. 아치는 하중을 1층 및 지하층의 전단벽을 통해 기초로 전달함으로써 기둥 그리드를 구조적으로 독립시키고, 유연한 공간 구성을 가능하게 한다. 이 구조는 기능적 합리성을 넘어, 도시의 관문이라는 개념을 상징적으로 형상화한다.

매스 하부에 형성된 퍼블릭 플라토(Public Plateau)는 들어올려진 지면을 공공 영역으로 환원하며 도시의 흐름을 내부로 끌어들인다. 이 입체적 광장은 공연·전시·이벤트 등 다양한 프로그램을 수용하고, 도시 중심에서 해안으로 확장되는 보행 네트워크의 연속성을 완성한다. The ARC는 외부 형태에서 내부 공간까지 확장된 ‘관문(Gateway)’의 개념을 통해, 사람과 사람, 도시와 세계, 그리고 사람과 지식을 연결하는 새로운 도서관 유형을 제안한다.

The ARC - Library of Songdo international city

Situated at the intersection of Convensia-daero and Academy-ro, the site serves as a symbolic node of Songdo International City, where the openness of the coast and the high-density urban landscape overlap. Drawing on this unique sense of place, The ARC proposes a new public icon that mediates between the city and nature, allowing daily life and culture to coexist. The building maximizes natural light through its south-facing orientation and simultaneously accommodates both urban and natural axes by visually responding to the POSCO Tower while extending its volume toward the coastline.

The structure of The ARC is based on a catenary arch following an inverted catenary curve that makes the efficiency of gravity legible in form. By transferring gravity loads to the foundation through shear walls, the arch liberates the central space from the column grid, ensuring flexibility in spatial configuration. Beyond functional rationality, this structural system symbolically embodies the concept of an "Urban Gateway."

The Public Plateau formed beneath the mass returns the lifted ground to the public realm, naturally drawing the urban flow into the interior. This three-dimensional plaza accommodates diverse programs such as performances, exhibitions, and events, while completing the continuity of the pedestrian network extending from the city center to the coast. Through the concept of a ‘gateway’ that extends from external form to internal space, The ARC proposes a new library typology that connects people to one another, the city to the world, and humanity to knowledge.
