도시의 프리즘

광주 대표 도서관

광주 시립 중앙도서관의 대지는 주거 지역과 인접한 도시 녹지 공원 내에 위치하며, 광주천과 직접 맞닿아 있어 하천과 공원을 따라 펼쳐지는 풍부한 조망을 형성할 수 있는 잠재력을 지닌다. 인접 부지에 계획된 소각장 재생 프로젝트와 공연예술센터 프로젝트와 함께, 광주 시립 중앙도서관은 도시의 새로운 문화 중심지로 성장할 가능성을 갖는다.

본 제안은 도서관의 기능과 더불어 지역 커뮤니티를 위한 집합적 장소를 동시에 제공하는 것을 목표로 한다. 시민들이 일상적으로 활용하고 점유할 수 있는 다양한 커뮤니티 프로그램을 수용하며, 도서관의 주요 기능은 층별로 자연스럽게 분리된다. 카페테리아는 프로그램 간의 전이 공간에 배치되어, 서로 다른 기능을 연결하는 매개체로 작동하며 사회적 교류를 촉진한다.

제안된 매스 구성과 재료의 결합은 이 문화 시설의 중요성을 물리적으로 드러내며, 도시를 상징하는 아이콘인 ‘도시의 프리즘(Prism of the City)’이라는 정체성을 명확히 표현한다. 매스는 향후 개발 계획을 고려한 보행 동선을 자연스럽게 수용하도록 최적화되었으며, 포디움의 정의를 통해 지상층의 프로그램적 유연성을 확보함과 동시에 프리즘 형태의 조형적 존재감을 강화한다. 이중 재료로 구성된 톱니형 외피는 끊임없이 변화하는 자연광에 반응하며, 시간에 따라 다른 표정을 지닌 ‘도시의 프리즘’을 형성한다.

프리즘이라는 개념은 내부 공간 구성에도 일관되게 확장 적용된다. 보존서고는 하나의 단일한 매스로 구성된 ‘지적 프리즘’으로 제안되며, 각 층에서 그 기념비적 존재감을 드러낸다. 이 지적 프리즘을 중심으로 배치된 아트리움과 이를 연결하는 계단은 서로 다른 스케일의 공간을 생성하며, 이용자에게 다양하고 입체적인 공간 경험을 제공한다.

‘도시의 프리즘’은 신성 비례로 여겨지는 3:4:5 구조 그리드 시스템을 기반으로 하며, 프리즘 형태의 외피 디자인과 통합되어 계획되었다. 이를 통해 표준화된 유닛 커튼월 시스템의 제작과 시공이 가능해진다. 구조와 외피는 내부 공간 구성과 직접적인 관계를 형성하며, 독서에 적합한 개인적이고 친밀한 공간인 ‘베이 윈도우’를 도입함으로써 도서관의 공간적 경험을 한층 풍부하게 확장한다.

PRISM OF THE CITY

City Main library Gwangju

The site for the City Main library Gwangju is located at the city’s green park next to residential area and directly adjacent to Gwangju streams hence has great opportunity to create spectacle views along the river and park. Along with Incinerator factory regeneration project and performing art center project planned at neighbor site, City Main library Gwangju has great potential to grow as new cultural center of the city.

Proposal envisions to provide library and the gathering place for the community at the same time. Project accommodates programs for the community members to utilize and occupy on daily base, library function is naturally separated in different floors. Cafeteria is allocated in transitional zone and works as connector to bridge programs and promotes social interactions within.

Proposed massing combined with materiality physically express the importance of this cultural center and reveal its iconic identity, PRISM OF THE CITY.

Massing was optimized to naturally receive the pedestrian access with the consideration of the upcoming future developments. Podium definition allows programmatic flexibility at ground level and enhance its prismatic presence. Serrated exterior enclosure with dual materiality forms PRISM OF THE CITY with ever changing appearance under constantly changing daylight condition.

Idea of Prism is extended and consistently applied for the internal organizations. Preservation library is presented as intellectual prism as singular mass, revealing its monumental presence at every level. Atrium with interconnecting stairs around the intellectual prism brings different scales of spaces and provides diversified user experiences.

Prism of the city is based on sacred 3:4:5 structural grid system and integrated with prismatic enclosure design. This allows standardized unitized curtain wall system fabrication and construction. Structure and enclosure has direct relationship with internal organization and introduces ‘bay window’, personal/intimate space ideal for reading.
