공공의 숲

서울시립동대문도서관

활기찬 주거 커뮤니티의 중심, 초·중학교와 맞닿은 대지 위에 자리한 이 도서관은 GLAM 개념을 통합한 복합 문화 플랫폼이다. 이곳에서 지식은 저장을 넘어 생산·공유·전시되며 재해석되고, 건축은 이러한 확장된 공공성을 공간으로 번역한다. 고밀도 아파트가 수직으로 솟은 도시 맥락 속에서 건물은 경쟁적으로 상승하기보다 낮고 넓게 펼쳐지며, 적층된 목재의 결로 콘크리트 숲의 긴장을 완화한다. 기념비적 오브제가 아닌, 일상에 스며드는 ‘지식의 숲’이자 발길이 머무는 열린 공공의 마당이다.

건축의 뼈대를 이루는 CLT와 글루램 적층 목구조는 구조이자 공간이며 마감이 된다. 노출된 집성목 기둥과 보 사이로 스며든 빛은 목재의 결을 따라 확산되며 촉각적 밀도를 형성한다. 분절되고 중첩된 매스는 중정을 중심으로 연결되어, 빛을 끌어들이고 소음을 완충하는 동시에 도시와 내부를 잇는 공공적 심장부로 작동한다. 계단과 브리지가 교차하는 수직 동선은 멈춤과 흐름을 반복하게 하며, 도서관을 여정의 공간으로 전환한다.

대지의 고저 차를 수용한 낮은 진입부는 가로와 자연스럽게 이어지고, 피봇 도어로 확장되는 중정은 실내외 경계를 흐린다. 목재 루버와 유리의 이중 외피는 빛을 조절하고 밤에는 온기를 드러낸다. 지상층의 열린 플랫폼에서 상부의 사색 공간으로 이어지는 단면은 변화하는 지식 환경에 유연하게 대응한다. 수직의 도시 속에 수평의 숲을 펼쳐 도시의 결을 다듬고 사람을 잇는 플랫폼이 된다.

Civic Forest

At the heart of a vibrant residential community beside local schools, this library operates as a hybrid platform integrating GLAM. Knowledge moves beyond storage to be produced, shared, exhibited, and reinterpreted. Within a dense high-rise context, the building extends low and wide rather than competing vertically, its layered timber softening the concrete forest. Not a monument, it becomes a permeable “forest of knowledge” — an open civic ground for everyday life.

The CLT and glulam frame serves as structure, space, and finish. Light filters between exposed columns and beams, diffusing along the grain to create tactile depth. Interlocking volumes gather around a courtyard that draws in light, buffers noise, and forms a civic heart linking city and interior. Crossing stairs and bridges choreograph pause and movement, turning the library into a spatial journey.

Responding to the site’s level change, a lowered entrance extends from the street, while pivot doors open the courtyard to blur inside and outside. A double skin of timber louvers and glass modulates daylight and glows warmly at night. The section progresses from an open civic platform below to contemplative spaces above, adapting to evolving modes of knowledge. Within the vertical city, it unfolds a horizontal forest that refines the urban grain and connects people.
