미래를 위한 도서관: GLAM (Gallery · Library · Archive · Museum)

활기찬 주거 커뮤니티의 중심부이자 초등학교와 중학교에 인접한 대지 한가운데, 지식과 영감을 위한 새로운 성소인 넥서스(NEXUS)가 자리한다. 책이라는 물리적 매체로부터 점차 해방된 지식은 다양한 디지털 미디어를 통해 접근 가능해지고 있으며, 이에 따라 도서관의 역할과 물리적 공간의 사용 방식, 그리고 공간 프로그램에 대한 근본적인 재고가 요구된다. 넥서스는 미래의 도서관이 현재와 다가올 사회적·문화적 흐름을 반영해야 한다는 인식 아래, 지역 커뮤니티의 다양한 욕구를 수용할 수 있는 유연한 공간과 문화·이벤트 중심의 통합 프로그램을 제안한다.

다목적 이벤트 공간 - 유연성과 적응성, 흐려지는 경계

대지 주변 가로의 레벨 차를 분석하여 일련의 플래토(plateau)를 도입하였다. 각 매스의 지상 레벨은 대지의 고저 차에 따라 미묘하게 조정되어, 어느 방향에서든 공공 가로로부터 자연스럽고 연속적인 접근이 가능하도록 계획되었다. 고저 차에 따라 분절된 매스는 도서관으로의 진입 지점을 명확히 드러내며, 계단식으로 구성된 플래토는 다양한 스케일의 공간을 형성하여 동시다발적이거나 순차적인 이벤트 모두를 수용할 수 있다. 통합된 중정과 접이식·회전식 도어의 적용은 실내와 실외의 경계를 흐리며, 정원 도서관과 같은 독특한 공간 경험을 만들어낸다.

24시간 열린 행잉 가든 - 커뮤니티를 위한 산책로, 새로운 이벤트의 무대

넥서스는 도서관 프로그램을 넘어 공공 공원과 산책로의 역할을 수행하는 행잉 가든(Hanging Gardens)을 제공한다. 내부 중정과 연결된 외부 계단을 통해 다양한 규모의 테라스, 정원 도서관, 카페테리아가 위치한 옥상 및 이벤트 공간으로 접근할 수 있으며, 모든 외부 공간은 24시간 개방되어 커뮤니티의 일상적 이용을 지원한다. 풀어헤쳐진 외피와 스크린 루버는 매스의 스케일을 인간적인 비례로 완화하는 동시에, 24시간 순환 동선을 감싸며 차양과 독특한 공간 경험을 제공한다. 절제된 표현 속에서도 강한 문화적 아이콘으로서의 정체성을 형성한다.

지속가능한 설계와 접근성

지속가능성은 도서관 설계 전반에 걸쳐 통합적으로 적용된다. 태양광 패널은 디지털 인프라를 지원하고, 빗물은 조경 관수를 위해 재활용되며, 녹화된 옥상은 단열 성능을 높이고 생물 다양성을 촉진한다. 가로에서 직접 접근 가능한 내부 중정은 자연채광과 자연환기를 유도한다. 또한 램프, 엘리베이터, 넓은 동선 계획을 통해 이동 약자를 포함한 모든 이용자를 고려한 접근성을 확보하였다. 다양한 연령층을 위한 독서 자료와 공간 구성은 포용성을 핵심 가치로 삼는 미래형 도서관의 비전을 구현한다.

Nestled at the heart of vibrant residential community directly adjacent to elementary and mid-dle schools lies a sanctuary of knowledge and inspiration – the NEXUS. Being liberated from its physical limitation of books, the knowledge can be accessible via various digital media. The purpose of the library and physical space usage and space programming is challenged. The NEXUS envisions to offer the library for future shall reflect current and upcoming trends: versatile physical spaces need to accommodate more of desires from the commun ity and offer integrated program more related to culture and events.

Versatile Event Space: Flexibility and Adaptability, Blurred boundaries

By analyzing the elevation of streets surrounding the site, a series of plateaus are introduced. Ground levels are varied in relation to site elevation to maximize the accessibility from public street. Ground plane for each mass is subtly stepped to be aligned with street allowing seamless access from streets at any point. Subdivided masses created for elevation alignments are lifted to mark the access points to the library. Cascading plateaus aligned to ground level offer different scales of pod can be used as various types of events: either simultaneous and multiple or sequential and whole. Along with Integrated courtyard and applications of folding and pivot doors blur boundary between indoor and outdoor spaces and creates unique spatial experiences such as garden library, etc.

Hanging Gardens for 24 Hours: Promenade for community members, Unique event opportunities

Besides the library programs the Nexus offers public park and promenade as Hanging Gardens. Dedicated exterior stairs accessible from inner courtyards are provided to various scales of terraces, garden library, roof with cafeteria and event spaces allowing the public circulation to access all the exterior spaces for 24 hours. Unraveled façade, screen louvers, breaks down the scale of mass to human scale and wraps the 24hr exterior circulation for shading and unique experiences and understated, but strong identity as cultural icon.

Sustainable Design & Accessibility

Sustainability is woven into every aspect of the library’s design. Solar panels power the digital infrastructure, rainwater is harvested for irrigation, and green roofs provide insulation and promote biodiversity. Inner courtyard accessible from streets offers daylight and natural ventilation. The design prioritizes accessibility for all, with ramps, elevators, and wide aisles to accommodate visitors with mobility challenges. Inclusivity is emphasized through diverse reading materials and spaces suitable for all age groups.
