Uplifted Strata는 주상절리의 형성 원리를 건축적으로 전유하여, 지면을 능동적 공간 생성의 주체로 재구성한다. 이 프로젝트에서 지형은 점유의 대상에 머물지 않고, 스스로 융기하고 두터워지며 그 자체로 건축이 된다.
주변 공원에서 시작된 얇은 흙과 잔디의 켜는 연속적으로 솟아올라 완만한 언덕을 이룬다. 융기된 표피 아래 비워진 공간에는 주상절리를 추상화한 육각의 기둥들이 조밀하게 채워진다. 이 기둥들은 구조체이자 동선, 계단, 그리고 좌석으로 작동하며, 형태의 반복과 변주를 통해 대지의 단차를 흡수하고 촉각적 경험이 연속되는 장(field)을 구성한다.
중심축을 따라 정렬된 공간 조직은 명확한 방향성을 부여하는 동시에, 가장자리를 따라 체류와 점유를 유도한다. 내부의 타원형 개구부는 자연광을 깊숙이 끌어들이며, 기둥들이 만들어내는 리듬과 공간의 깊이감을 강조한다.
놀이와 휴식, 관찰을 위한 경관으로 계획된 이 프로젝트는 대지와 건축 사이의 경계를 허문다. 건축은 대지 위에 놓인 객체가 아니라, 장소에 잠재된 지질학적 조건들이 결합되어 드러난 결과이다. 자연과 인공이 맞물리는 연속적인 장 속에서, 공간적 경험은 새롭게 형성된 지형을 따라 이어진다.

Uplifted Strata: Columnar Basalt as Inhabitable Landscape
Uplifted Strata reinterprets the formative logic of columnar basalt, recasting the ground as an active agent of spatial production rather than a passive datum. Here, terrain is not merely occupied by architecture; it is lifted, thickened, and becomes architecture itself.
A thin layer of earth and grass rises seamlessly from the surrounding park, forming a gently ascending topography. Beneath this lifted surface, a hollowed volume is filled with a dense field of hexagonal pillars abstracted from basalt columns. These elements operate as structure, circulation, steps, and seating, resolving changes in level through repetition and variation while generating a continuous, tactile spatial field.
Organized along a central axis, the pavilion establishes clear directional order while encouraging inhabitation along its edges. An elliptical opening draws daylight deep into the interior, reinforcing the rhythmic articulation of the columnar field and the perception of spatial depth.
Conceived as a landscape for play, rest, and observation, the project dissolves the boundary between ground and architecture. Architecture emerges not as an object placed upon the site, but as the manifestation of latent geological conditions embedded within it. Within this continuous field—where natural and artificial systems interlock—spatial experience unfolds along a newly formed terrain.
